New to 102 Actors Lab?
Please include a brief description of your acting experience and what you'd like to explore in class.
The Approach
With over 20 years of experience as a director, actor, screenwriter, and producer, David brings a unique, holistic approach to the craft of acting—one grounded in a deep understanding of story, character, and the industry itself.
In this five-week course, actors will work on a variety of scenes, exploring character through physical, intellectual, emotional, and philosophical lenses. David’s guidance helps actors make bold, thoughtful choices rooted in the text, while also considering the character’s role within the larger narrative and the world around them.
This is not a rigid, formulaic class. Instead of following a single methodology, the course is designed to meet each actor where they are—recognizing that every artist’s path is different. The focus is on helping you discover and refine your own process in a collaborative, supportive environment.
By prioritizing hands-on scene work and meaningful exploration, the class encourages risk-taking, curiosity, and personal growth—empowering actors to connect more deeply to their craft and their voice.
Class Structure
Over the five weeks, you’ll work on five different scenes—each chosen to challenge you and expand your range. Scenes will be sent out 4–5 days before class, along with your scene partner’s information, so you have time to prepare.
The material is drawn from plays, films, and TV—but with a focus on lesser-known or unconventional pieces. This is intentional: the goal is to spark fresh, original interpretations rather than relying on familiar choices. If there’s a specific type of character or scene you’re eager to explore, let David know—this is an opportunity to dive into roles you may not typically encounter.
Props should only be used if truly essential. In many cases, project titles and character descriptions are removed from the sides to encourage unbiased, text-focused interpretation. You’re encouraged to come “off book” (as memorized as possible), to allow for honest, present connection with your scene partner. That said, calling for a line is always welcome—this is a space for exploration, not perfection.
Each class runs approximately 3–4 hours. While you’re encouraged to stay and observe others (there’s a lot to learn from watching), you're welcome to leave once your scene work is complete.
The structure remains flexible, adapting to the group’s energy and individual needs. Sometimes a shared theme emerges, and the class will shift to explore it more deeply. Drawing from his broad experience across writing, acting, and filmmaking, David emphasizes story, relationship, and the often-unspoken dynamics between characters.
This isn’t just about acting—it’s about discovering the deeper layers of storytelling and honing your unique artistic process.
